Nutrition for busy professionals: the five habits that move the needle

Most adults do not need a stricter diet. They need a handful of habits that hold up on a Tuesday when a meeting runs long and dinner is whatever is fastest. Here is what we prioritise with nutrition clients, in order.

1. Protein at every meal

Protein is the habit with the highest return: it keeps you full, protects muscle while you lose fat, and it is the one thing most busy adults chronically under-eat. Aim for a palm-sized portion at each meal as a starting point rather than counting to a decimal.

2. Build a default breakfast and a default lunch

Decision fatigue is the real enemy. Two repeatable meals you actually like removes two-thirds of your daily food decisions and takes the pressure off dinner, which is the meal you control least.

3. Eat before the event, not after

Business dinners and family parties go badly when you arrive starving. A protein-forward snack in the afternoon changes what you order without any willpower involved.

4. Drink your water before your coffee

The 3pm crash is often mild dehydration wearing a costume. Front-loading water in the morning is a trivially small change that people consistently report as one of the most noticeable.

5. Track the habit, not the calories

For most of our clients, a weekly check-in on how many days each habit happened predicts progress better than a food log they abandon in nine days. When calories do need attention, we add them later — once the foundation is stable.
